Arnita A. Jones ext. 100
Executive Director. Arnita joined the AHA in June 1999, after serving 11 years as Executive Director of the Organization of American Historians. She received her bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University and the MA and PhD in modern European history from Emory University. Arnita was also Program Officer for Planning and Assessment at the National Endowment for the Humanities and was the first director of the National Coordinating Committee for the Promotion of History.

Jessica Folmer ext. 100
Executive Office Assistant. Jessica received a BA in political science with a minor in history in May 2007 from Salisbury University. She responds to general inquiries, plans council and division meetings, and assists in administering research grants and book prizes.
Jesse Pierce ext. 106
Administrative Assistant. Jesse received her BA in History from George Mason University in December of 2007, where she concentrated on American Studies. Jesse is staff to the Teaching Division, Committee on Women Historians, Committee on Minority Historians, Committee for Graduate Students, the Committee on Committees, as well as the Association's Research Division.
Debbie Ann Doyle ext. 104
Administrative Manager, Public History Coordinator & Convention Assistant. Debbie joined the Association in August 1998. She serves as the primary contact for public history matters for the Association. She works with the assistant director on annual meeting functions and is responsible for fielding general questions and requests regarding the annual meeting. She is the primary liaison for the Local Arrangements Committee and works closely with the Program Committee. She also staffs the Committee on Research Grant Awards and supervises the administration of the Association's book prizes, research grants, public history award, and film prize. Debbie works with the Assistant Director, Administration to staff the Professional Division. She staffs the Joint AHA, NCPH, OAH Working Group on Evaluating Public History Scholarship, the Task Force on Disability, the Joint AHA-OAH Committee on Part-Time and Adjunct Employment, and other committees as needed. She serves on the in-house editorial board for Perspectives on History. Debbie received a BA in history from Clark University in 1990, a master's degree from American University in 1993, and her PhD in American History from American University in August 2003.
Noralee Frankel ext. 114
Assistant Director, Women, Minorities, and Teaching. (PhD, George Washington Univ., 1983 with a doctoral field in African History from Howard University). Noralee is senior executive staff to the Teaching Division, Committee on Women Historians, Committee on Minority Historians, Committee for Graduate Students, and the Committee on Committees. She is the author of Freedom's Women: Black Women and Families in Civil War Era Mississippi (Indiana Univ. Press, 1999), Break Those Chains at Last: African Americans, 1860-1880 (Oxford Univ. Press, 1996) and is the coeditor of Gender, Class, Race, and Reform in the Progressive Era (Univ. Press of Kentucky, 1991). She has a contract with Oxford University Press for her manuscript entitled Stripping Gypsy: The Creation of Gypsy Rose Lee.
Sharon K. Tune ext. 101
Assistant Director, Administration and Convention Director. Sharon received her BA, summa cum laude, in history, political science, and English from the College of the Ozarks, Point Lookout, Missouri, and her JD from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Sharon serves as head of the Administration Department and as senior staff assistant to the Association's Professional Division and the Nominating Committee. In addition, she administers copyright matters for the Association and the Award for Scholarly Distinction. As Convention Director, she negotiates annual meeting contracts and oversees general administration for the annual meeting, including editing the Program.
Miriam Hauss now works for the National History Center.
Business Office:
Randy Norell ext. 109
Controller. The office of controller was established by Article IV of the 1974 AHA Constitution as one of three appointed officers, along with the executive director and the editor of the AHR. Randy works closely with the executive director and is responsible for preparing the annual budget, monthly financial statements, supply and procurement of services, supplies, and equipment. He provides administrative support for the Association and prepares financial reports for federal government and private foundations that support the Association. Most recently, he has led the effort to shift accounting and accountability measures to cost centers, working with senior staff, the Council, and the Finance Center.
Kelly Elmore ext. 111
Marketing Manager. Kelly received her BS in Marketing Management from the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech in May 2003. She manages marketing, advertising and development for the Association, advertising for the American Historical Review, and the exhibits and registration portion of the Annual Meeting.
Scott Sobelman ext. 110
Staff Accountant. Scott manages accounts payable and logs all accounts receivable transactions. He is also responsible for administering payroll and benefits to the office. Scott graduated from the George Washington University with a BBA in Business Administration.Matt Burruss ext. 108
Publication Sales/Business Office Assistant. Matt received a BA in international relations and East Asian studies with a minor in Japanese from Eckerd College in 2007. Matt works in the business office where he oversees the sales and distribution of publications, the processing of mail, and assisting the business office in its daily operation.
Membership Office:
Michelle Hewitt ext. 123
Membership Coordinator. Michelle works primarily on processing individual memberships. She is also responsible for process on-line membership dues.
Pamela Scott-Pinkney ext. 115
Membership Manager. Manages the day-to-day operations of the membership department. She also overseas processing of membership and subscription dues. In addition, she assists with Annual Meeting registration.
Office of Publications, Information Systems, and Research:
David Darlington ext. 120
Associate Editor, Perspectives on History. David came to the AHA in December 2001. He holds an MA in History (2001) from the University of Maryland, College Park, where he served as a graduate assistant for the Freedmen and Southern Society Project. He received his BA in History from Muhlenberg College in 1999. David is responsible for the employment section of Perspectives on History, as well as the obituaries, and announcements about exhibits, seminars, awards and fellowships.
Elizabeth Fairhead ext. 135
Research Associate. Elizabeth received her PhD in American Studies from Michigan State University in 2006. She currently works on the Gutenberg-e project.
Elisabeth Grant ext. 117
Web Content Editor. Elisabeth maintains and edits content on the AHA web site. She also writes for and administers the AHA's blog AHA Today. In 2005, she received a BS in Psychology and a BA in English, with a concentration in Professional Writing, from Virginia Tech.
Christian Hale ext. 133
Production Manager, Publications. Chris received his MA in American history from George Mason University in 2001 and received his undergraduate degree in history at San Francisco State University. He has been working for the Publications department since December, 2001. Chris is responsible for all of the production and layout of the various AHA publications, including the print version of Perspectives on History. He also edits and produces Perspectives on History Online, and helps maintain the AHA website.
Vernon Horn ext. 122
Internet Projects Manager. Vernon received his BS in History from Towson University and his MA from the University of Maryland, College Park. Vernon first joined the Association as Page Putnam Miller's intern on the National Coordinating Committee for the Promotion of History. He maintains computer systems and the web site.
Staff Writer. Jessica got her BA in English with a concentration in Professional Writing in May 2007 and is currently working on her MA in Professional Writing and Rhetoric at George Mason University. She writes for AHA Today and Perspectives on History.
Pillarisetti Sudhir ext. 121
Editor, Perspectives on History. Sudhir is responsible for the editing, design, and layout of Perspectives on History. He also edits Perspectives on History Online. Sudhir received his PhD in South Asian history from the University of London and has taught in universities in India before moving to the United States. Before joining the AHA in May 1996, he was a technical editor with Reed Technology and Information Services and taught (as an adjunct teacher) South Asian history at George Mason University and the State Department's Foreign Service Institute. Sudhir is interested in cultural history as well as computers, and coedited Interrogating Modernity: Culture and Colonialism in India (Calcutta: Seagull, 1993).
Editor, Directory and Manager, Annual Meeting Job Center. Liz co-edits the Directory of History Departments, Historical Organizations, and Historians with David Darlington and is responsible for text updates and layout. She also manages the annual meeting Job Center, and proofreads most publications produced by the department. Liz also maintains the Directory of Dissertations in Progress and the Directory of Doctoral Programs. Changes to either of these web-based directories can be sent to her attention throughout the year.
Robert B. Townsend ext. 118
Assistant Director, Research and Publications. Robert serves as senior staff assistant to the Association's Research Division, maintains databases and statistics on the historical profession in the U.S., and oversees print and online publications produced at the AHA headquarters office. He is the author of over 150 articles on various aspects of history, higher education, and electronic publishing in Perspectives on History, AHA Today, the OAH Newsletter, New Directions in Higher Education, and the American Association of University Presses Exchange. He is currently completing his doctoral studies at George Mason University, working on a dissertation about the discipline under the working title “Making History: Scholarship and the Historical Profession, 1880–1940.”
